I made a field trip to see Kim Skidmore of K & E Ranch Eggs. Her farm is nestled in the foothills near Sanger, CA where she lives with her husband and extended family.
Kim is a busy woman who also runs a grocery share group for friends offering organic foods. When she isn’t packing bags of goodies for her friends and family, or feeding her beloved flock of laying hens, she is delivering eggs to her customers.
From Kim’s website: “Our hens are pasture raised on our property with worms & organic feed available daily. We offer Thursday and Friday morning delivery and Thursday & Friday afternoon scheduled pick up available. Soon available in local country stores.”
I’ve been buying eggs from Kim for quite a while now and find them to be of higher quality than those you would find in a store that were not organic. The chickens get organic feed and real protein which gives the eggs a darker yolk and a thicker shell.
From an article on Roedale’s Organic Life: “Some major benefits of organic eggs—such as the fact that they’re higher in omega-3 fatty acids, free of antibiotic residues, and contain no arsenic, which is added to factory-farmed chicken-feed to prevent infections and spur growth.”
I believe the benefits you get with organic foods far outweighs the cost in the long run. You only get one body, take care of it, it has to last a lifetime!
